Engine Repair in Rural Hall and Kernersville, NC
What’s Under the Hood?
The engine is the heart of your vehicle. It’s a complex system of interconnected parts that work together to generate power and keep your car running. At its core, the engine consists of a cylinder block, which houses pistons that move up and down to create combustion. These pistons are connected to the crankshaft, which converts their motion into rotational energy. Then, above the cylinders sits the cylinder head, containing components like valves, spark plugs, and the camshaft, which is what controls the timing of the valves opening and closing. There are other key parts of the engine, however, including the timing belt or chain, which synchronizes engine components; the fuel injectors, which deliver fuel into the combustion chamber; and the intake and exhaust systems, which manage air flow in and out of the engine. Essentially, the engine is made up of much smaller parts that all must work together in tandem to keep your car moving safely and efficiently. Overheating and How to Fix It
One of the most common and potentially damaging engine problems is overheating. This typically happens when the engine’s temperature rises beyond its normal operating range due to a breakdown somewhere in the cooling system. It’s emergent, and if not addressed, can lead to very expensive repair work on your car’s engine, as well as other areas of the vehicle as well.
There are several things that can cause overheating:
- A low coolant level due to a leak in the radiator, hoses, or water pump is one common culprit.
- A malfunctioning thermostat can also prevent coolant from circulating properly.
- A clogged radiator.
- A broken cooling fan.
- A faulty head gasket, which can allow engine oil and coolant to mix.
If the temperature gauge in your vehicle has spiked, or you see steam coming from under the hood, it’s important to act fast. The best response is to pull over safely, turn off the engine, and let it cool down. Driving on an overheated engine can cause irreversible damage that isn’t always fixable. Then, once the engine is cool, have the vehicle towed to our professional auto repair shop, where our ASE-certified technicians can take a look at things. Engine overheating is not a DIY problem. It requires a thorough inspection to identify the cause and ensure proper repairs, which may include replacing the radiator, thermostat, or even more extensive engine work.
