Natural Forces Under Your Control
Although our ASE-certified technicians take care of all the mechanical details of brake repair for you, you may find it helpful or comforting to know a little more about how your vehicle stops. In short, brakes allow you to have natural forces under your control. When you press the brake pedal, a level and piston send brake fluid from the master cylinder, which is stored through brake lines. It arrives at another cylinder located near each wheel. Once there, it is able to move the brake caliper. That part holds the brake pad and sends it into contact with the rotor. Also called the disc, it’s the large metal component inside each wheel. That configuration holds true for at least the front and all of the wheels on newer vehicles. Older cars and the rear wheels of some newer automobiles have drum brakes. They work similarly, but a brake shoe contacts the drum, turning inside the wheel. In either case, two important forces are in play. The pressure of your foot against the brake pedal is multiplied by the fluid. A light touch enables you to stop a heavy auto. Also, it is friction resulting from the metal-on-metal contact at the wheel that actually stops your vehicle.
