The Catalytic Converter Explained

Even if technical details are not your favorite thing, you’ve probably heard of the catalytic converter. However, you may wonder what it is and why your vehicle needs one. We’re happy to give you a quick and easy explanation. As part of your automobile’s exhaust system, the catalytic converter is a metal chamber underneath your car. A pipe brings in gassy fumes–obviously harmful to the environment–to be cleaned, and another carries the improved exhaust away to be expelled. The interior of this component is made of precious, expensive metals. Usually, these are platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Through a chemical reaction, the metals clean the fumes from gasoline and diesel-powered engines, eliminating the most noxious elements and releasing a less damaging by-product. Specifically, the metals act as catalysts that either reduce nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and oxygen or oxidize carbon monoxide such that it becomes carbon dioxide. Precious metals are used as catalysts because they remain stable and are still effective even at very high temperatures. They’re inert in solid metal form, but when applied to supports inside the converter as nanoparticles, they’re quite effective at dealing with pollutants. Unfortunately, the fact that these metals are expensive makes them attractive to thieves. The Environmental Protection Agency/Federal Government requires that all modern automobiles sold in the United States have functional catalytic converters to meet emissions-limiting standards.
